Special Programs

A number of special programs operate each year as an integral part of our overall curriculum. These help to develop and extend the diversity of talents, skills and experiences of our students and may include the following:

  • Reading Recovery – a 1:1 program for students in Year One experiencing difficulty with Reading and Writing
  • Bridges – A one to one literacy support program for students in grades 1 to 4.
  • Bridging The Gap – a 1:1 program to support students in senior classes who experience difficulty with Reading, Writing and Spelling
  • Tournament of Minds
  • Maths Support for students in grades 3 and 4
  • Maths Talent Quest
  • School Concert (biennial)
  • Science Search
  • Chess Club – each Friday lunch time

Extension Programs

The needs of the gifted and talented students are met through:

  • The provision of a challenging differentiated curriculum
  • Extension programs e.g. maths extensions groups in years 3-6
  • A ‘Wise Ones‘ program for students with advanced aptitude scores
  • Programs/Competitions such as Gateways, Maths Talent Quest, Science Talent Search, Tournament of Minds
  • Gifted & Talented Days are held each term at the school to develop talents in a specific area. So far days have been held with a focus on technology skills, art, performing arts, literacy, poetry, circus skills, science (reptiles) and chess

Buddies Program

This is a special feature of school life at Wonga Park Primary School. Each of the prep children have a Grade 6 “buddy“. Buddies ease the transition from Pre-school to school by providing an older friend in the playground. Learning experiences, where Grade 6 children tutor or help the Preps, are valuable for both age groups as they teach co-operation and caring in our school.

Special Theme Days

Whole school activities are a feature of the school program. All children are involved and multi-age groups are often utilised. Parents are always welcome to participate in these days.
