Classroom Music

Music is one of the most pervasive art forms in our society, and it is appropriate that it is art of the curriculum for all children in our primary schools.

Music at Wonga Park is taught by Beth Parker & Kristy Salisbury. Classes focus on the fundamentals of music, whilst also broadening their musical knowledge and appreciation.

Students are learning about the elements that come together to create music:

  • Rhythm.
  • Melody.
  • Expression.
  • Tone colour.
  • Style.
  • Harmony and form.

Students are developing music appreciation by listening and responding to a wide variety of musical styles and genres, such as classical music, jazz, world music, broadway, etc.

They are being taught the ryhthmic values and names of notes and are applying this theoretical knowledge by playing and writing rhythms and simple tunes on untuned and tuned instruments (eg. keyboard on the Garage Band app and xylophones).

Performing ArTS

The Performing Arts are well catered for at Wonga Park, with a specialist music & performing arts program being delivered to all classes. A highlight of 2015 was the whole school production of "Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies." This experience was a great opportunity for children to experience the thrill of performing and also to be  part of working in a team. The school concert is held bi-annually (in odd years).

The school choir offers students from Levels 3 to 6 the opportunity to perform at the whole school concert, assemblies, open night, carols night and other special events throughout the year. Choir is an opportunity for students to listen to and sing a range of vocal music, to broaden their repertoire. They also learn performance skills like neat presentation, voice projection, uniformity through actions and facial expressions. Simple harmonisation will be taught to enhance the students' choral experience.

The after school Sports Aerobic program is yet another opportunity for students from Prep to Grade 6, to perform and compete.

Instrumental Lessons

Excellent visiting music teachers offer tuition for a variety of instruments, either individually or in groups. 'Junior Rockers' also offers vocal training and the opportunity for students to be part of a junior or senior band.
